Care and common sense
We keep these notes short and practical. Each one takes a single question, gives the honest answer, and points out when the job is one for a technician rather than a Saturday afternoon.

Repair & Maintenance
Will the springs be adjusted while you are there?
No, and that is deliberate. An inspection reads the counterbalance: the technician checks the coil, measures wire size and length, and watches how the door behaves by hand. If it is out of step with the door's weight, the report says so and by how much. Winding a spring is its own appointment, done once the door is clamped and the system is calm, which keeps the inspection record honest about the door as found. Garage Door Safety Inspection
Why does my door struggle in cold weather?
Cold affects several things at once. Old lubricant thickens into a drag on every hinge and bearing. Steel contracts slightly, so a track that was snug becomes tight. Rubber seals stiffen and the bottom seal can freeze to the slab. The opener then reads all this extra resistance as an obstruction and stops or reverses. A fall tune-up with a low-temperature lubricant, silicone on the seals and correctly set force goes a long way toward smooth winter mornings. Garage Door Tune-Up
How is a reset different from a track repair?
In a reset the rail is sound and the work is putting rollers, cables and sections back where that rail expects them, with minor alignment corrections. In a track repair the rail itself is the problem and must be straightened, re-hung or partly replaced first. One visit can include both, and the technician tells you which you need after looking at the door rather than guessing from the description. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What happens if my door's design has been discontinued?
It happens with older doors, since embossing patterns, joint profiles and colours change over the years. The technician looks for the nearest current section from the same manufacturer and describes how it would differ in look and fit. Sometimes the difference is minor and acceptable; sometimes the joint no longer mates. In that case the options are a section from a compatible series, or replacing the door as a whole, and both are explained before anything is ordered. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
How do worn rollers affect the opener?
An opener is built to guide a balanced door, and every wheel that binds, wobbles or grinds adds resistance it has to overcome across the whole travel. It works harder, runs hotter, and may trip its force limit or reverse partway through a cycle. After roller replacement the technician confirms the door holds its own weight with the opener released, then checks the opener's force setting and its reversal on a test block, since a door that moves freely often needs those settings reduced. Does hinge work affect the springs or the door's balance?
Hinge replacement leaves the springs untouched, since the door stays closed and the counterbalance is not unloaded. Balance is checked at the end all the same, because a door the opener has to drag is one of the main reasons hinges fail early. If the door drifts up or sinks when lifted by hand and released, the technician explains the spring adjustment needed and offers it as its own decision. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
What is the track made of, and what sizes are there?
It is galvanized steel folded into a channel that the roller wheels ride in. Residential doors almost always use two-inch track, with three-inch reserved for heavier or wider doors. The curved piece comes in a radius, commonly 12 or 15 inches, that sets how much headroom the door uses. Replacement pieces are ordered to the same profile, gauge and radius as the rest of the set. How long do lift cables usually last?
Cables tend to live about as long as the springs they work with, often ten years or more on a door used a few times a day, and less on a door that sees heavy use or a wet, salty floor every winter. Rather than a calendar, watch the condition: fraying, rust near the loop or a slack side are the signs the set is due. Garage Door Cable Replacement

How long does a diagnosis visit take?
The checks themselves run in a set order and take a modest part of an hour on most doors. What extends a visit is the repair that follows: a gear kit or capacitor adds a little, a sensor re-wire or a trolley change adds more, and a door-side problem such as a balance fault may mean a second piece of work. You are told where things stand once the cause is found, before any further work begins. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Should I use the slide lock on the door with a chain drive?
No. The manual slide lock on the door is disabled or removed once an operator is connected, and the technician checks that during the repair. A motor pulling against a locked door strains the chain, strips the drive gear and can bend the top section of the door. If you want the door secured against remotes, the lock button on the wall control switches them off, and a track lock designed to work with an operator does the rest. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Does the trolley need replacing when the belt does?
Not usually. The trolley is checked while the belt is off: its halves should part with the release cord and lock again, the housing should be free of cracks and it should ride the rail without play. A trolley that passes those checks stays and simply receives the new belt and a fresh clip. One that sticks or rattles is replaced in the same visit. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will a new opener make the door quieter?
A belt or direct drive with a soft-start DC motor removes most of the operator's own noise, and a level, well-tensioned rail removes the rattle. The door contributes its own sound through rollers, hinges and springs, so the technician looks those over during the balance check and can fit nylon rollers or fresh hinges at the same time. Together the two changes turn a morning rumble into a hum. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
What happens to my current opener?
Its condition, intended capacity, rail position and connection geometry are reviewed against the proposed door. If it is suitable and included in the scope, it can be reconnected after the new door passes manual travel and balance checks. Limits, photo eyes, reversal response and emergency release are then tested for the completed system. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
What safety checks are done after installation?
The installer first checks manual balance, cable tracking, roller travel, track supports, fasteners and the fully open and closed positions. If an operator is connected, complete powered cycles follow. Photo-eye response, contact reversal according to the operator instructions, wall controls and emergency release are demonstrated. The customer also receives guidance on safe gripping points and keeping clear of section joints. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can two single doors be replaced with one wide door?
Yes, as a coordinated renovation. The centre support, new header or beam, side jambs, electrical routing, and finished opening are building-work considerations, while the sectional door needs suitable clearances, pressure criteria, reinforcement, tracks, and attachments. Structural design and door selection should be aligned before materials are ordered so each trade works to the same dimensions. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
How are two side-by-side doors made to look consistent?
The layout uses shared reference lines for window height, panel divisions, handles, strap accents and exterior trim. Each opening is still measured separately because floors and jambs can differ. Samples and elevation drawings help resolve whether both doors use identical patterns or coordinated versions scaled to their widths. Installation then checks closed position and seal contact independently while preserving the planned visual alignment. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
